Mental Health Awareness Training
Diversity considerations in public services, employment and health/mental health
Dissociative Identity Disorder A key topic in this mental health awareness training, an understanding of how dissociative identity disorder manifests itself is conveyed using factual references, straightforward explanations and lived experiences applied to the facts.
The workshop ("Understanding Dissociation & Trauma") aims to provide an insight into symptoms and behaviours typical in trauma survivors of all backgrounds. There is focus on trauma resulting from childhood and early adulthood experiences, and so, we consider how brain development from childhood through early adulthood influences how these experiences are processed. Trauma-related dissociative episodes can result in inappropriate responses, angry outbursts, communication difficulties and sudden inexplicable anxiety. In terms of mentally disordered offenders, this can mean repeated problematic behaviours including self-harm, risk-taking, anti-social behaviour and a need to "mask" overwhelming internal responses to emotions through substance or alcohol misuse. In respect of colleagues, this can result in stigma in the workplace, generally poor wellbeing, high turnover and sick leave. The workshop also provides guidance on how to support someone with trauma symptoms. It is a full day course offering 6 CPD points. "I found the specifics around dissociation and the real life examples that Julie Anne went through very interesting. In particular, she made all of the information very accessible and as such, I would recommend her training for any of my students to engage with. I usually find that people focus on anxiety in relation to trauma but Julie Anne linked it all together very nicely." Shona Langley, Lecturer in Sexual Health "In my role I have to identify and understand risks when people are returning to the UK and this has helped my understanding. Your real life experiences brought it to life." E. Rowland, "Prisoners Abroad" |
Diversity and Inclusion Training This workshop demonstrates how both the recent and historical backgrounds of culturally and linguistically diverse peoples influence behaviours, attitudes and social expectations.
It considers how an awareness of equality and diversity can ensure the provision meets everyone's needs and is of use to public, third and private sector providers as well as employers. Entitled "Diversity - Communicating To Bridge The Gaps", this event demonstrates how social, cultural or linguistic differences can influence expectations and communication between parties. Topics considered here are:

"I found the subjects discussed extremely interesting and Julie Anne is clearly knowledgeable in this area. I feel I can bring some of this new knowledge to my team. This session has given me a lot to reflect on in terms of how professionals work with and support BAME families. I now feel more confident to discuss these subjects with other professionals. Julie Anne created a safe space which allowed me to feel free to share my thoughts and opinions without feeling judged. I found the session really engaging and it has left me wanting to learn more."
