The workshops
Mental Health Awareness Training: Understanding Dissociation & Trauma begins with a presentation to identify behaviours & symptoms associated with trauma and associated conditions, with particular insight into trauma-related dissociation. It is presented from a personal perspective with lived experiences as examples together with referenced research. The afternoon workshop, Handling Those In Distress, considers basics around helpful and unhelpful behaviours, neurolinguistic programming, attachment disorders, triggers and grounding techniques to help someone with trauma related symptoms, among others.
Diversity and Inclusion Training: Diversity - Communicating To Bridge The Gaps considers the concepts of language, culture, identity, social expectations, Honour Based Violence, intergenerational trauma and more to promote awareness of how value can be added to the provision for culturally and linguistically diverse peoples. |
Background #1
Julie Anne has been a translator and interpreter in the legal field running her own business, having previously spent a brief period in the Armed Forces then in the Police. Between 2016-2017 she held the position of Local Assistant to an MEP, a role which afforded many public speaking opportunities on her boss' behalf. This later provided the foundation to speak to groups about her experiences with post-traumatic stress disorder. |
Background #2
It was only following a significant life event that Julie Anne became aware of some symptoms of concern and counselling helped her fill in "gaps" she realised had been there for a considerable part of her life. A triggering event in 2016 inspired her to share her experiences in an attempt to increase knowledge of the impact of trauma on individuals among agencies and anyone coming into contact with vulnerable, potentially traumatised people, whatever their age or background. |
Background #3
Julie Anne has worked as a linguist supporting both public and private law clients. It was her professional experiences particularly in criminal, immigration and family matters, however, coupled with her very personal awareness of mental health issues, that highlighted many of the communication difficulties that often arose when culturally and linguistically diverse peoples became involved in the legal, social services and health care settings. |
